Hey, Calvary Fremont –
The ground is shifting. We’ve gone from wondering when Jesus will return to wondering who the antichrist will be to wondering what society will look like when AI takes the throne. Jesus wants to redeem us. The antichrist wants to rule us. AI wants to replace us – not all of us, though. But enough to make a lot of people worried about the prospects of an AI dominated society. AI-istan will shape our values and morals and determine what is and what is not correct thinking.
You can GOOGLE ‘The Future of AI’ and be reading for weeks. It’s exciting stuff. It’s frightening stuff. It’s unsettling stuff – at least for me. But I take comfort in the eternal truths of the Bible.
God the Father has not changed and will not change. AI may take the job of the order taker at Carl’s Junior and write code at the software companies – but AI will never ascend to the throne of our Father. AI is not your Creator. AI does not love you – which means that AI can never fill or complete you. AI is not for you, but if God is for you, who can be against you?
God the Son has not changed and will not change. His death and resurrection were not the technological fix for a sinful human nature. A spiritual problem does not have a technological solution. AI will not open heaven for you – but Jesus has. Put your trust in Him!
God the Spirit has not changed and will not change. God the Spirit will not look at the promise and power of AI and jump the Trinitarian ship and become the Frontman for AI. The Holy Spirit comes to convince people of their great need for Jesus – not the benefits of AI.
What else has not changed and will not change? AI cannot change or perfect human nature. Man is separated from God by sin and AI cannot redesign human nature. Man is separated by sin from God and only the blood of Christ – His life given for us – can make man right with God. Only the regeneration accomplished when forgiven people receive the Holy Spirit can change transform human nature.
Did you notice that not one theological or anthropological truth is affected by AI?. God’s nature and man’s nature remains the same. Therefore, the mission, mandate, and message of the Church remain the same. No adjustment is needed for AI. Some may ask, “What is the Church to do in the Age of AI? How should the Church respond to the promise and threat of AI?” The Church should pursue the holiness of God, practice the love of God, and preach the gospel.
Yes, AI may drastically affect the rhythms and patterns of life as we know it. From what I read, expect the future to be quite disruptive – socially, politically, economically – when AI reaches adulthood. But as Psalm 46:2 exhorts us: “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea,”
The disruption predicted to affect our lives by the aggressive emergence of AI will be a glorious opportunity for Christians to share the gospel with frightened, overwhelmed people. How should you prepare for AI? Learn to share the gospel! The world needs it more than ever.
