Anchors aweigh!

Philosophy has managed to strip the heavens above us of any gods and drain the world we live in of any purpose and meaning. We’re all alone and we’re on our own. This sums up what Paul Tyson writes in the May/June 2024 edition of Touchstone Magazine in an article entitled ‘Mission Impossible.’ The Ship of Humanity was once firmly anchored to God above and Truth below, but we have cast off the anchors of God, Heaven, Absolute Morality, Objective Truth, Marriage, Family, Sexual Sanity, Gender – even the anchor of Science has been cast off! Preference reigns! Feelings rule! Desires run the show! I am who I say I am and God and morality and science can’t tell me any different.

Tyson writes, “Having been rudely thrown into existence, we must, by sheer willful art, create our own self-actualized being as we hurtle toward Nothing…I alone create myself in my own divine image…I alone give meaning and value to my self and my world.”

As the anchors are cast off, the Ship of Humanity drifts further and faster from its original mooring. The moral freefall of the last two decades has been astounding. We are on the High Seas of Meaninglessness and Purposelessness with no shore in sight. Our voyage of magnificent Discovery has become a Drift of narrow-minded Invention. Shipwreck is inevitable. Thank God for the Gospel!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ sets anchor points in the life of the follower of Jesus. Titus 2:11-14 puts it this way –

FOR THE GRACE OF GOD HAS APPEARED, BRINGING SALVATION TO ALL MEN, INSTRUCTING US TO DENY UNGODLINESS AND WORLDLY DESIRES AND TO LIVE SENSIBLY, RIGHTEOUSLY AND GODLY IN THE PRESENT AGE, LOOKING FOR THE BLESSED HOPE AND THE APPEARING OF THE GLORY OF OUR GREAT GOD AND SAVIOR, CHRIST JESUS, WHO GAVE HIMSELF FOR US TO REDEEM US FROM EVERY LAWLESS DEED, AND TO PURIFY FOR HIMSELF A PEOPLE FOR HIS OWN POSSESSION, ZEALOUS FOR GOOD DEEDS.

The Gospel anchors us in God the Father who created us, God the Son who redeemed us, and God the Holy Spirit who transforms us. This Triune anchoring holds us fast to the truth of God’s Word, to objective morality, to sexual sanity, and to reason. What many refer to as Progressive is really just a massive Drift from Triune Reality.

Jesus is the Rock. Jesus is the Anchor. Build your life on Him and He will hold you fast. You don’t have to invent meaning and purpose and identity. These are discovered as you live your life in God.
