Hey, Calvary Fremont –
If Jesus isn’t God, then heaven is full of Idolators. The worship is thick and intense and passionate around the throne of God. “And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.””
Every created thing throughout the whole realm adore the Son as much as they adore the Father. No angelic prophet takes wing to denounce the honor being given to the Son. No ominous shadow engulfs the scene due to some kind of heavenly blasphemy. The Father doesn’t rise from the throne crying out in fury, “What is this!?” and demand that He and He alone receive the highest praise.
If Jesus isn’t God, the idolatry of earth nearly matches the idolatry of heaven. For though we have not seen Him, we adore Him to the same degree that we adore the Father. Our praise and worship is directed to God the Father and God the Son with the same intensity and passion. Though we distinguish between the Father and the Son in our theology, we make no separation in our worship. The embodiment of the Son is the perfect revelation of the Father. For Jesus Himself said, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father.” Jesus is either pathological, or He is God.
If Jesus isn’t God, then Jesus Himself is a liar! Jesus referring to Himself as “I Am” (a reference to the revelation of God to Moses at the burning bush) is somehow taken by some to mean “I Am not!” Yet there is no mistake – Jesus knew that the claims He made to Sonship, Oneness, and Unity with the Father would be, and were, understood to be claims to deity.
If Jesus isn’t God, the Apostle Paul is a false guide for he tells us in the book of Colossians that the fullness of deity dwelt in Jesus in bodily form. Wow! Parse that!
If Jesus isn’t God, He was crucified for the wrong reason. It was Jesus’ blasphemy of claiming oneness with God that made the High Priest tear his robe and send Him to Pontius Pilate for trial and execution.
If Jesus isn’t God, His death on the cross is a meaningless bit of historical trivia. Sin is not forgiven; death is not conquered; heaven is not open – and we are still in our sins. If Jesus is not God, all is lost. Hell is laughing.
There are far too many of us who won’t do the theological backflips and engage in the intellectual mind-bending necessary to rob Jesus Christ of His deity. We are delighted to join with all creation in Revelation 5:13 and lift our voices with them. “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”
The uniform witness is overwhelming. Heaven and earth, apostles and angels, scripture and saints, resurrection and enthronement, both Father and Son – all join together in single testimony that Jesus Christ is God!
Worship the Lord your God. Raise your hands and your heart and your voice and cry out to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb. With Thomas, fall to your knees before Jesus and confess, “My Lord and my God.”
